Creative Inspirations: Luca Tu’avao Walton, illustrator and artist
Luca Tu’avao Walton currently resides in Tāmaki Makaurau, the "Polynesian capital of the world." Born in Lautoka, Fiji, to a Tongan mother and a Kiwi expat father, Luca's work serves as a reflection of his heritage, cross-cultural identity, and memories of his childhood surroundings in the vibrant Kingdom of Tonga.
Their upbringing in the lagoon side hamlet of Mataika, Tongatapu has been a significant source of inspiration. Luca continues to draw inspiration from the strength and character of the Pasifika women who have played important roles in his life.
Luca's most recent illustrated book is Rere Atu ki Poronihia / Flight to Polynesia, written by Tangaroa Paul and published by Oratia Books in partnership with Auckland Council Libraries.

The writers and/or creatives that have inspired my illustration work are...
Abroad I greatly admire the work and creative journey of Shar Tui’asoa aka Punky Aloha and more locally talented illustrators like Story Hemi-Morehouse and Michel Mulipola aka Bloody Sāmoan!
My desert island book would be...
I had to google this one but my best bet seems to be The SAS Survival Handbook because if I’m stranded, I likely wouldn't reach for romance or tales of glory, I need water purification instructions and fire-starting techniques. I know how to keep myself entertained on an island :)
My favourite Pasifika artist/writer or book is...
Coco Solid and Manuha’apai Vaeatangitau, both write with wit, intelligence and heart, straight from the core. The shared trait of vulnerable truth makes it so their work is near impossible to misunderstand and raises their perspectives to something akin to gospel.
