Michael Steven was born in 1977. He began teaching himself to write poems in Christchurch Prison, where he served a sentence for drug-related offending. He is the author of numerous chapbooks and three highly acclaimed collections. His honours include the 2018 Creative New Zealand Todd New Writers Bursary and the 2021 Kathleen Grattan Poetry Award. He works as a tutor of electrical engineering and lives in rural West Auckland.
