Inspired by the unforgettable moment a bat won New Zealand's Bird of the Year in 2021, this charming picture book follows young Matt the Bat on his quest to achieve the impossible - take out the top spot in Forest & Bird's famous competition. There's just one tiny issue: Matt isn't a bird. As he battles self-doubt and public outcry, Matt stays true to his mission; to stand up for bats everywhere. With courage and heart, he proves that even the most unexpected voices deserve to be heard.

A celebration of difference, determination, and the power of showing up, Matt the Bat is a story for every young reader who's ever felt a little out of place.

$1 from every copy sold is donated to Forest & Bird to support their conservation work across Aotearoa.

About the Author

Matt the Bat and the Bird of the Year is the debut picture book from author Catherine Budai and illustrator Clare Cudmore-Neame. The pair first met as children's librarians at Birkenhead Library, where their shared love of storytelling and beautifully crafted books sparked this creative partnership. With a strong understanding of what captivates children during story time, Catherine and Clare bring a perfect blend of heart and humour to their work.

Catherine draws on her background in early childhood education, while Clare's experience in art and design brings Matt's world to life with warmth and character.

The result is a timeless, uniquely Kiwi tale celebrating courage, curiosity, and one very determined bat.
