Some places to look for reviews of New Zealand books

Academy of New Zealand Literature

A rich source of long-form interviews, features, extracts, essays and conversations about contemporary NZ fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. Long book reviews run on Wednesdays and Fridays, with short versions of many also appearing in Canvas magazine (NZ Herald).

Aotearoa New Zealand Review of Books

The Aotearoa New Zealand Review of Books publishes long-form reviews of new local fiction, nonfiction and poetry. A platform for timely, in-depth discussions of contemporary literature and culture, featuring established and emerging reviewers from the South Pacific.

Hooked on Books

A website for young adult (YA) readers all about reviewing that also houses an archive of professional reviews of YA titles. Hooked on Books is part of Read NZ Te Pou Muramura.

Kids Books NZ
A blog reviewing New Zealand books for children and young adults, includes Teacher’s Notes - by writers (some with library/teaching backgrounds) Maria Gill, Rachael Craw, Brin Murray, Clare Scott and Vanessa Hatley-Owen.

Landfall Review Online

As well as the reviews included in the two print issues of Landfall each year, Landfall Review Online publishes additional review pages, each month featuring six to eight reviews. An archive of all previous online reviews is a feature of the site.

Newsroom, the Reading Room

An independent New Zealand-based news and current affairs site. The ReadingRoom section, edited by Steve Braunias, has reviews and other features on New Zealand books.

New Zealand Listener

The New Zealand Listener returns late September 2020 (after a brief hiatus) with Mark Broatch as Books Editor. Link to come.

New Zealand Booklovers

This site was created by book lovers for book lovers. It is a bookworms' hub, dedicated to bringing New Zealanders everything they need to know about reading and the world of literature, and to making this information accessible to everyone. Working alongside publishers and book publicists, NZ Booklovers showcases both New Zealand and international titles. It provides a platform for sharing articles, author interviews, reviews, and book-related stories, as well as book news, competitions, and reading and writing advice. 

NZ Poetry Shelf

“A poetry page with reviews, interviews and other things”: Paula Green - New Zealand Poet Laureate 2009-2011, children’s author, reviewer and anthologist - updates her site regularly with reviews and features on New Zealand poetry.

New Zealand Review of Books Archive

The New Zealand Review of Books: Pukapuka Aotearoa was a quarterly magazine which ran from 1991 to late 2019. A full archive of issues from 1991 is available online.

Pantograph Punch

An arts and culture site with occasional reviews of (but many other forms of response to) New Zealand writing - search under Literature.

Radio New Zealand

Regular reviews on “Nine to Noon” of both international and New Zealand books.
