Tony Howell
Biography
Tony Howell joined the New Zealand Army as a Regular Force Cadet at the age of sixteen, graduating as a qualified Instructor All Arms in the Infantry Corps. In 1963, he attended the Portsea Officer Cadet School, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant after 12 months. As well as serving as a Senior Instructor at the School of Infantry, Tony served in 1 RNZIR as a Platoon Commander during the Borneo Confrontation and in Vietnam with V2 Company, as the Mortar Platoon Commander in the rank of Captain and, later, as a Company Commander in the rank of Major. After several staff appointments, he commanded the NZ Special Air Service for four years in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After 28 years of distinguished service, Tony resigned to create his own Scuba diving business, a passion he still enjoys.
