Gavin and Helen Cook run Country Retreat Animal Sanctuary in Warkworth, New Zealand, where they rescue animals in trouble, with a focus on pregnant dogs and puppies.They are the stars of TVNZ's popular television series, The Dog House New Zealand.
Frances Cook is a reformed money mess, currently managing podcasts for the New Zealand Herald, Newstalk ZB, and RadioSport. She is best known for hosting the personal finance podcast 'Cooking the Books', one of New Zealand's top podcasts. Gaining a Master's in Media Studies from Victoria University of Wellington, Frances went on to work as a journalist, first at RadioLive then NewstalkZB, before moving to cover politics for ZB. She more recently made the switch to work at the Herald, first as a senior multimedia journalist, and now in her podcast role. As well as hosting 'Cooking the Books', Frances also hosts 'The Front Page', which goes behind the scenes of the biggest investigations out of the Herald newsroom. She is the executive producer of podcasts 'Speaking Secrets' and 'Trip Notes', with others in the pipeline. She is a regular commentator for Newstalk ZB radio shows, particularly on politics and personal finance matters.

David Cook is a photographer and lecturer based at Massey University, Wellington. His published photobooks deal with communities in transition. Lake of Coal: The Disappearance of a Mining Township was a finalist of the 2007 Montana NZ Book Awards. Meet Me in the Square (2014) reconstructs the city of Christchurch through images he made in the central city during the 1980s. River Road: Journeys Through Ecology (Cook, Puke, Valentine 2011) explores the landscape through a bicultural lens. Michael Cooper is New Zealand’s most acclaimed wine writer, with 40 books and several major literary awards to his credit, including the Montana Medal for the supreme work of non-fiction at the 2003 Montana New Zealand Book Awards for his magnum opus, Wine Atlas of New Zealand. In the 2004 New Year Honours, Michael was appointed an ONZM for services to wine writing. Author of the country’s biggest-selling wine book, the annual New Zealand Wines: Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide, now in its 24th edition, he was awarded the Sir George Fistonich Medal in recognition of services to New Zealand wine in 2009. The award is made each year at the country’s largest wine competition, the New Zealand International Wine Show, to a ‘living legend’ of New Zealand wine. The weekly wine columnist for the New Zealand Listener, he is also New Zealand editor of Australia’s Winestate magazine and chairman of its New Zealand tasting panel.
Rauhina Cooper (Ngati Kahungunu, Ngai Tahu) is a teacher and facilitator in kura supporting teachers in te reo Maori. She is passionate about the survival and use of te reo Maori. Rauhina lives in Ohaupo. She wrote this story so tamariki from different whanau groups could see themselves in the pages of a book.
